From catching flights to answering phones - Meet one of our volunteers, Sandy Overall
Updated: Mar 17
She traveled all over as a flight attendant for 20 years, and now she’s volunteering for Home Repairs Ministries. How did Sandy end up here?
At 12Stone Sugarloaf, Sandy heard from Home Repairs’ Board President Bill Isaak about HRM’s golf classic fundraising event. “I ended up missing the event by about a week, but Bill said that if I wanted to, I could help out Mark Wolfe [HRM executive director] in the offices,” she said.
Sandy began coming in once a week to assist Mark with extra clerical duties. Once COVID shook things up, however, she began volunteering from home. “I’ve been returning calls to homeowners in need to see how we can help and getting the application process started with them,” she said. “More recently, I’ve also been calling our past clients and asking them to do a survey.”
And the answers Sandy has gotten from the surveys have shown her the difference these repairs are making in the lives of local, low-income homeowners.
“I’ve been amazed with these volunteers’ attention, generosity, care and compassion and the work that God is doing through them,” said Sandy. “The homeowners that Home Repairs serves don't have anywhere else to turn for help, and the ministry has been such a blessing to so many people.”
Since retiring, Sandy knew she wanted to find volunteer opportunities, and the chance to give her time with Home Repairs came at just the right time. It’s now been nearly two years since she began helping out.
“Giving of my time is important to me, because I believe God has called us to do so. I believe we have to give back, and I just love being a part of this great team,” she said.
Sandy is a wife of 45 years, a mother to three grown children who live in the Atlanta area, and a grandmother to her three “grandangels.” She enjoyed a 20-year career as a flight attendant with Delta Airlines before retiring. Sandy’s favorite pastimes include travelling, hiking, biking, crafts and spending time with her loved ones.
Through her time volunteering with HRM, Sandy has discovered the ways that home repairs can change lives, and the ways that she can be a part of that change.
“I want others to know how caring this team is to those they serve, and I want to see the word get out about the good they’re doing so they can do more fundraising to help even more seniors and those with disabilities,” Sandy said.
“My dream for Home Repairs Ministries is that they will secure the volunteers and funding needed to expand outside of our current service area. We get many calls from people outside our area who also need our help.”
And to anyone unsure of whether they can really help, Sandy offers the following encouragement: “There are so many different opportunities; anyone can volunteer with Home Repairs.”
