Sue wasn’t quite sure where she’d turn for help.

“I prayed and prayed for the answer to my home repair needs,” said this Fulton County senior.

When a friend told her about Home Repairs, Sue knew this was the answer. She filled out a mail-in form requesting help and sent it off. It wasn’t long before she got a call from Home Repairs’ Executive Director Mark Wolfe.

“My prayers were answered!” Sue said.

After Mark and an assistant came over to review what needed to be done, a crew of volunteers returned to tackle Sue’s projects.

Thanks to those volunteers, Sue now has a grab bar to steady herself while going up and down the step into her garage.

“I am especially grateful for the grab bar they installed in my garage,” she said. “It works so well, and they even provided the bar. Every time I go up the steps, I think of them and feel grateful for their help.”

Volunteers also installed a new Ring doorbell and two smoke detectors and replaced an electrical outlet.

“I love my Ring doorbell. It records 24 hours a day. It recently recorded a stalker going through my neighbor’s mailbox. I was glad I could tell them what happened!” she explained. “I am so pleased to have these things fixed.”

Originally from Illinois, Sue came to the Atlanta area in 2001 for work.

“At first I regretted the decision to leave my family, but now I have no desire to be anywhere else,” she said. “I still stay in touch with my twin sister in Illinois and we have a very special connection.”

For someone like Sue, tackling home repairs alone is daunting. But having volunteers step in and help makes it doable. In fact, Sue said she’s already working on a list of future projects for the Home Repairs team.

“I can’t wait for them to come back! Everything they did made me feel safer in my home,” she said. “Their service is commendable, and I would highly recommend them to my friends. The volunteers were friendly and treated me like family. It feels like Mark is my brother.”

Mark Wolfe, Executive Director of Home Repairs, shared the same sentiment.

“We consider Sue, and all of our clients, part of the Home Repairs’ family,” he said. “We’re fortunate that we have the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people.

Sue doesn’t just appreciate the repairs. She’s also thankful for a direct — if unexpected — answer to her prayers.

“I feel that God sent the men to bless me; they made me feel safer in my own home,” she said. “Service is so hard to get here in Georgia, but they called me promptly, came on time, and have followed up with me to see how I’m doing. It’s fantastic. In a word, I just feel safe.”
